text_message from Polina: My great grandfather was born in Karelia around 1927-1930, and I would like to find his original or foster family name.
He was born as a 13th child to his biological parents, and thus was given to his mother’s sister as a 5th one. He was raised in some village/torp in Swedish until the Winter War. His uncle was killed, and the aunt was transferred with all her children and my great grandfather to the USSR, Vologda region. There, his four elder cousins were apparently immediately sent to an orphanage/school. While he and his aunt/stepmother were accommodated in a kolkhoz in the same region. The aunt died shortly after, and my great grandfather was taken into an orphanage as well, but to a different one than his cousins.
My great grandfather should have been around 12-13 years old at that time, but for some reason he didn’t know anything about his original nor foster family:
- He only knew his own name - Arvo.
- He didn’t know his last name, the names of his foster parents at the time when he was taken to the orphanage.
- He obviously didn’t know or remember anything about his biological parents.
- He didn’t know his birth date and year, or had no possibility to tell the orphanage staff, so they thought initially that he was 3-4 years younger than his true age.
- He didn’t remember his cousins’ names.
- He didn’t know where he lived, just that it was somewhere closer to Viipuri and Ladoga, and not the Onega lake. He did remember very well though how their house was looking and the surroundings.
- His uncle/foster father was a forest ranger, thus they lived in a forest, pretty far away from other settlements.
