Greetings,

My question is with respect to the Gummerus family. The first known Gummerus was Josephus Petri Gummerus. He was born in Turku in the 1590s. He was an Assistant Vicar of the Finnish Congregation of Turku – 1624-1628 and from 1630-1643 the Assistant Vicar of Sahalahti. He was the Clergyman of Orivesi 1643-1664. Joseph’s wife was named Skolastika Mattsdotter.

I believe that his father, Petri, was a Cavalryman in Turku who died before 1614. He is also thought to be of Scottish origin. Does anyone have any information on Joseph’s father Petri or his background?

An additional note regarding the origin of Petri, father of Joseph Gummerus, is that one source of corroboration for his Scottish heritage was a guide at Turku Cathedral. Perhaps Petri, or other members of the Gummerus family, are buried in the Cathedral (see - http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=1698138 (http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=1698138))? Any information, insight or assistance with respect to his ancestry would be much appreciated. Kiitos!

Cheers,

Pete

According to http://www.kansallisbiografia.fi/paimenmuisto/?eid=854 father is not confirmed.

Would think that the most up-to-date & complete information is available via the family association Gummerus-Pihkala sukuyhdistys (http://www.gummerus-pihkala.fi/index.html). Link "Sukuhistoria" takes you to several pages of family history - in Finnish. It seems to be well done and source critical. No firm statement on Peer and not a word of Scotland. Based on court records it states "Kertun vanhemmat olivat Sipi (Paavalinpoika ?) ja Aune, Kertun poika oli pappismies Jooseppi Pietarinpoika, Joosepin lanko oli Antti Sipinpoika Pihkala" ~Parents of Gertrud were Sigfrid (son of Påwel?) and Agnes. Son of Gertrud was priest Josephus Petri. Brother of Gertrud was Anders "son of Sigfrid" Pihkala.
