Greetings,

I’m looking for additional information on the parentage or background of Nicolaus Petri Roivainen (Roivas) or Idensalmensis. He was the Assistant Vicar of Juva – 1616-1623, Assistant Vicar of Mikkeli in 1617 and the first Clergyman of Iisalmi – 1627-1654. He was appointed the first Clergyman of Iisalmi in 1627 by King Kustaa II, Aadolf who confirmed a commission of appointment by a letter dated February 15, 1627 to the Bishop of Viipuri Olaus Elimaeus. Nicolaus used the letters “W.C.” in his signature which, according to some researchers, references an individual who has gone to school and is from Viipuri. (source: http://www.tervola.fi/KUUSELA/kahkoset_raakkyla.html (http://www.tervola.fi/KUUSELA/kahkoset_raakkyla.html)). Nicolaus was born approximately 1580 in Viipuri/Vyborg and died in 1654 or 1657 in Iisalmi.

I’d be very grateful for any assistance anyone could provide. Kiitos!

Regards,

Pete Dale

If you are trying to find Nicolaus Petri's parents, I believe it's impossible, because there are not many records from that time and in eastern part of the country there were even less of those. The year and place of birth are unknown, even though many believe that he was born in Viborg. It's not certain that he was born there, because as you wrote, the cignal W.C. can alson releate to the fact that he studied there. His last name comes from cultivation of linen and hemp, but it won't give us clues about his background.

There's a family society Roivainen-Roivas-Roivanen, which you can find in this address, but all information is in finnish, so it may be difficult to read: http://roiva.cjb.net/. The society has published two books which include information about Nicholas Petri's offsprings. He was married to Marketta Matintytär and they had atleast 8 children.

I hope I was able to help you atleast somehow. If you find out some thing more, I hope you let me know, because the family society actively collects information about the family. I'm not a member, but I've done research of my own.

Sincerely,

Elina Roivas-Alm
